Honour | The Fire Starter for Your Legacy 2025

Ps Larry Elliot preaching about Legacy and honour.

Howzit, Rhema family! I’m still feeling the heat from this past Sunday’s service at Rhema South Coast Family Church. Ps Larry Elliott brought a powerful message on honour, and it was like a Holy Spirit fire igniting within us all. This Legacy 2025 series is getting deeper and more impactful each week, and this message on honour was seriously needed.

Before we jump into the details, let me ask you a question that’s been on my mind: What are you carrying around that you’re going to leave as your legacy? Is it something that will build up those who come after you, or is it something that might hold them back? This series is all about being intentional about what we leave behind, and this week’s message on honour is a crucial part of that.

Last week, Ps Larry spoke about Godly Vision, to have a clear picture of what God wants us to do. This week, he built on that foundation by emphasizing that honour is the fuel that drives that vision forward.

Ps Ray would say: WHO YOU ARE is what you will pass down or impart to others. So, without honour in our lives, there is no legacy to pass on.

No Honour, No Substance

Ps Larry didn’t hold back: “No honour = no substance.” Let that sink in for a moment. In a world that often prioritizes self-promotion and instant gratification, honour can easily be overlooked.

But Ps Larry reminded us that honour isn’t just something we do; it’s who we are. It’s woven into the very fabric of our being.

He emphasized that sincerity carries substance. You can go through the motions, but if your heart isn’t truly in it, if there’s no genuine sincerity, then there’s no real weight to it. It’s like a beautiful building with a weak foundation – it might look impressive, but it won’t withstand the storms of life.

Honour Attracts God’s Power

And here’s a powerful truth Ps Larry shared: Honour attracts God’s power! When we live lives of honour, we create an environment where God can move freely. It opens the door for His blessings and His presence.

Many people want to experience God’s power, but they don’t realise that honour is the key that unlocks it. Ephesians 6:5-9 speaks about honouring those in authority, working as if for the Lord.

This applies to every area of our lives—our workplaces, homes, and churches. Are we honouring our parents? Are we serving with sincerity, knowing that we ultimately work for Jesus, not the world? When we walk in honour, we align ourselves with God’s order, and His favour flows.

“For those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” —1 Samuel 2:30

Walking in Honour | Practical Steps

So, how do we live honourably? Ps Larry shared these practical steps:

Obedience to God’s Word

Obedience written on a blackboard

James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Living in obedience is a sign of honouring God. By diligently studying and applying Scripture in our lives, we show respect for God’s commandments.

Gratitude, Prayer, and Worship

Honour starts with a heart full of gratitude. In everything, give thanks! (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Regular prayer and worship acknowledge His sovereignty and keep us connected to Him.

Serving Others

Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” Serving others with love and humility reflects God’s love and is therefore honourable.

Living with Integrity

Proverbs 11:3 teaches, “The integrity of the upright will guide them.” When we are honest and maintain integrity in all our dealings, we reflect God’s truthfulness.

Loving One Another

Jesus commanded us to love one another as He loved us (John 13:34-35). Honour fosters unity, trust, and encouragement within the Body of Christ. Demonstrating love and patience towards others honours God by mirroring His love.

  • Builds trust. When we honor others, we foster environments of mutual respect and trust. Our relationships become stronger as people feel valued and understood.
  • Fosters unity and harmony. Honouring others encourages a spirit of cooperation and unity. Ephesians 4:3 NKJV “endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
  • It encourages growth and hope. When we honor others, we encourage them to grow in their own strengths and abilities, providing affirmation and support; this in turn builds hope.
  • Creates a culture of love. Honouring others fulfills Jesus’ commandment to love one another, stimulating sincerity and honesty. 1 Peter 4:8 NKJVAnd above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.‘”
  • It promotes humility and selflessness. By preferring others in honour, we learn to value humility and set aside selfish desires, which is vital for healthy relationships.

Be real, be kind, be humble

A Legacy Built on Honour

A life of honour creates a lasting legacy. It builds trust, fosters unity, and encourages growth in those around us. It creates a culture of love and humility—essential ingredients for a thriving church and community.

A legacy built on honouring God and others is one that will last over time. It will create a foundation of faith and a culture of integrity and respect. The way we choose to honor God and others, therefore, plays a critical role in the legacy we leave behind.

Ruth is a perfect example of this. Despite personal loss, she honoured her mother-in-law Naomi, choosing to follow her God and people (Ruth 1:16-17). Her legacy was powerful—she became the great-grandmother of King David and part of Jesus’ lineage!

The Danger of Dishonour

On the flip side, not being a person of honour carries terrible and potentially devastating consequences. The Bible warns of the consequences of dishonor, highlighting how it can lead to personal and societal downfall. We must choose to be people of honour in every area of life.

Step into Legacy with Honour

Honour is not just about words—it’s about action. Let’s commit to living lives of honour, carrying substance and weight in God’s kingdom. If you missed the message, you can watch it here.

A Prayer for Honour

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, asking You to teach us the true meaning of honour. Help us to honour You in our daily lives, to honour our families, and to honour those You have placed in our lives.

May our words and actions reflect Your love and truth. Strengthen us to walk in integrity and humility, that we may leave behind a legacy that glorifies You.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Growth, hOPE AND lOVE

Let’s go into this week living honourably, knowing that who we are in Christ determines the legacy we leave behind. See you next Sunday!
