Spiritual Passion | A Journey of Renewal

Clock striking midnight, symbolising spiritual renewal and the new year.

As we step into the new year, our hearts are filled with hope and anticipation. At Rhema South Coast Family Church, we’ve embraced this new season with passion and purpose. On the last day of 2024, we gathered for our Cross-Over service—a night filled with worship, reflection, and a deep sense of community. Pastor Larry delivered a singular message on Spiritual Passion, setting the tone for what’s to come in 2025.

With our 21-day fast and prayer journey starting on the 6th of January, it’s the perfect time to ignite our spiritual passion and fervour to pursue God’s vision for our lives.

Worship and The Word: A Powerful Beginning

The Cross-Over service set the tone for a year filled with purpose and passion. A recording of our worship team performing three powerful songs—“There is Singing at the Ancient Gates,” “The One Who Was, The One Who Is,” and “Be Still and Know”—brought a tangible sense of God’s presence. Each song stirred our hearts, inviting us to pause, reflect, and draw closer to Him.

Pastor Larry’s message followed, challenging us to reflect on our spiritual passion. Are we living with a fervent desire to serve God daily? Romans 12:11 encourages us:
“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.”

What is Spiritual Passion?

Spiritual passion is more than a fleeting emotion. It’s a deep, burning desire to pursue Jesus wholeheartedly. It’s about living intentionally for Him in every aspect of our lives. Pastor Larry reminded us that Jesus, too, lived with great passion, even as He faced suffering. Acts 1:3 refers to His crucifixion as His “passion.”

Our passion for God fuels our faith, drives our purpose, and empowers us to share His love with others. It’s not about putting on a show or faking excitement—it’s a genuine, Spirit-led commitment to honouring Him.

Four Safe Places to Renew Spiritual Passion

Pastor Larry highlighted four spiritual “safe places” where we can rekindle our passion for God.

1. The Sanctuary

The sanctuary is where we encounter God’s presence, whether through personal prayer or corporate worship. Psalm 73:17 reminds us:
“Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I understood their end.”

The sanctuary is a place of refuge and renewal. It’s where we leave behind distractions and focus on God. Take time to attend services, pray, and worship with your church family.

2. The Night Room

Hebrews 4 speaks about the rest we find in God. The “night room” symbolises spiritual rest—a place to lay down our burdens and find peace in His promises.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Spiritual passion thrives when we rest in the finished work of Christ, trusting Him completely.

3. Under His Wings

Psalm 57:1 paints a beautiful picture of God’s protection:
“In the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by.”

When we feel overwhelmed, we can find comfort under His wings. Surround yourself with Godly mentors and a supportive church family who will uplift and guide you.

4. The Strong Hands

God’s hands are a place of strength and victory. Isaiah 41:10 assures us:
“I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Even in moments of weakness, God’s strong hands will carry us through. His strength renews our passion, giving us the courage to move forward.

Keeping the Flame Alive

Spiritual passion isn’t something we cultivate once—it’s a daily pursuit. Here are three key ways to keep the flame alive:

  1. Pursue Jesus
Make time to study His Word and spend moments in His presence. Psalm 63:1 reminds us to seek Him earnestly:
“O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You.”
  2. Protect God’s Vision
Guard the vision He’s placed in your heart. Don’t let the distractions of life extinguish your zeal for His Kingdom.
  3. Share His Love
Spiritual passion grows as we serve others. Whether through a kind word, an act of generosity, or sharing your testimony, let God’s love flow through you.

21 Days of Fasting and Prayer

As we prepare for our 21-day fast starting on the 6th of January, let’s remember the purpose of fasting and prayer. It’s not about convincing God to move; it’s about aligning our hearts with what He’s already done.

Fasting helps us refocus and draw closer to God. It’s a time to surrender our desires, seek His will, and reignite our passion for His work.

Pastor Larry encouraged us to embrace this season with open hearts. Isaiah 58:6 reminds us of the power of fasting:
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?”
