On Sunday, 29 December, Pastor Larry introduced our new series, 21 Days, with the first message titled, Teach Us to Pray. It was a heartfelt sermon focused on the power of prayer and the transformative journey we go on when we truly connect with God.
As we prepare for the upcoming 21-day fast starting on 6 January, Pastor Larry encouraged us to embrace this time with open hearts and genuine intentions—not for what God can do for us, but to align ourselves with what He has already done.
Ebenezer’s haunting rendition of The Lord’s Prayer set the tone for a deeply moving service, reminding us of the significance of prayer as the foundation of our spiritual lives.
Preparing for 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting
Fasting and prayer aren’t about showcasing our spirituality but about deepening our relationship with God. As Matthew 6:5-6 says, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Pastor Larry reminded us that prayer should come from a sincere heart, expressing our desires, needs, and gratitude to our Heavenly Father. It’s not about the words we use but the honesty behind them.

The Heart of Prayer
Jesus taught us to pray with sincerity and focus, as highlighted in Matthew 6:7-8: “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore, do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”
True prayer stems from recognizing Jesus as our ultimate authority, as Revelation 1:5 reminds us: “Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.”
Pressing Forward in Prayer
In Colossians 4:2, we’re encouraged to, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.” Pastor Larry emphasized the importance of perseverance in prayer, especially when answers seem delayed. The Greek word for “continue” suggests a never-give-up attitude—a commitment to pressing forward with faith and expectation.
Aligning Our Lives Through Prayer
Sometimes, unanswered prayers reflect areas in our lives that require surrender. Pastor Larry shared a powerful reminder: ask God if there’s anything you need to let go of. When we repent and align ourselves with His will, the blockages are removed, and the answers often come swiftly.
Paul also urges us to stay alert in prayer: “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Staying vigilant helps us recognize God’s answers, which may arrive in unexpected ways.
Transforming Our Thoughts, Words, and Prayers
Pastor Larry highlighted the profound connection between our thoughts, words, and prayer life. Philippians 4:8 encourages us to focus on what is true, noble, just, and pure, saying, “Meditate on these things.”
When our minds dwell on God’s truth, our words naturally reflect His grace and love. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” What we speak can either build us up or tear us down.
Three Great Prayers to Guide Us
- Father, I hallow Your name.
Recognize God’s holiness and start every prayer with reverence. - Father, make me more like You.
Allow God to shape your character into His image. - Father, help me reach others for You.
Let your life be a testimony of His grace and truth.
Teach Us to Pray | A Call to Action
As we step into our 21 days of prayer and fasting, let’s come together as a church, seeking God with open hearts. Remember, prayer isn’t about what God can do for us but aligning ourselves with what He has already done. This season, focus on surrendering areas of your life that need His touch.
Reflect on Matthew 6 and the example Jesus gave us in The Lord’s Prayer. Allow His grace and truth to guide your thoughts, shape your words, and empower your prayers. Together, let’s walk in unity, expectant for God to move in mighty ways in 2025.
- Commit to daily prayer: Set aside intentional time each day to seek God’s presence.
- Reflect on your heart: Ask God to reveal any areas needing surrender.
- Join us in unity: Whether fasting food, activities, or distractions, let’s do it together as a church family.
- Stay expectant: Watch for God’s answers, which may come in ways you least expect.
